Nimoy - "It's not fair on Zach for me to continue"

Leonard Nimoy has spoken of his desire to leave the Spock game to Zachary. The 79 year old actor told Kevin Williamson at the QMI agency that he would not appear again as Spock in the rebooted Star Trek series.

"I want to get off the stage. Also, I don’t think it would be fair to Zachary Quinto, he’s a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it’s time to give him some space. And I’m very flattered the character will continue." he said, also stating that after his Fringe appearance as William Bell was done, he would retire from acting altogether. "I’ve been doing this professionally for 60 years, I love the idea of going out on a positive note. I’ve had a great, great time."

Zach recently joked that he would personally request Nimoy return to play Spock in Star Trek 12, which according to Zoe Saldana, will have a shooting date announced within a month.

Today Zach commented; "There’s not even a script and Leonard just announced his retirement,” said Quinto. “He’s not going to do another movie.

“Frankly, Leonard has got a mind of his own and he’s going to do what he wants regardless of what other people tell him. I’m just glad that he’s my friend.”

Zachary Quinto : Nothing Trek related for 2 years

In a telephone interview with Wired.com Zach has distanced himself from Star Trek-related activity for the next two years.

He told interviewer Gus Mastrapa “I’m stepping away from Star Trek for at least two years — no movies, no conventions, no anything for a while.”

He also stated “I’m stepping away from that genre and exploring a lot of other territory,” Whether this includes the fantasy series Heroes was not clear, but his comments may worry producers at Heroes who are currently pitching for a fifth season to NBC.

UK based Constellation Events currently have Zach announced as their first guest for a Glasgow convention in July.

The statement probably would not apply to promotional appearances such as any which might occur at San Diego Comic-Con or similar events, as these would normally be within the contractual obligations for Star Trek and Heroes.

UPDATE - From the horse's mouth
i have been inundated with questions and confusion about a comment i made during an interview with wired - about the new atari star trek online game - in which i said i am stepping away from trek for the next two years. obviously i will be a part of any upcoming films... reprising my role as spock. what i meant was that in the meantime i won't be making any public appearances related to the franchise - or doing anymore auxiliary projects pertaining to the trek universe. i will be focusing my efforts on other projects and preparing to shoot the next film - which will be released in june of 2012... two years from now. hence the no trek for two years remark. worry not trekkers. it was a misunderstanding of context. i am not spock. but i am spock. all at the same time.

Zach : No more TV after Heroes

Zachary appeared at the Trek Con in Las Vegas this weekend and announced that he will do no more television after Heroes, preferring to work on movies.

Calumfan AKA Shelly on the LJ community ontd_startrek was at the con and reports back with this information :

On the Star Trek audio book : he admitted he hated doing it and thinks he sucks on it! (He must be insane)

On his fave scenes to film : he liked the scene in the turbo lift with Uhura and also kicking Chris Pine's ass

On Sasan in So NoTORIous : he liked playing Sasan but felt there was no more growth to be had with the character

On Before The Door : They have just sold a TV pilot and have two films in development as well as the comic books

There are more great pics from Shelly in the gallery

Zach at Comic Con

Zachary will be in attendance at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, which runs from July 22nd to 26th.

Panels

Zach will be on the Heroes panel at the Bayside Hilton, at 3.15pm on Saturday. The rom holds 2,000 people but it;s best to get there and queue as soon as you can. They generally don't clear the room after panels (best to check first) so to be sure of a seat, get in there very early and stay sitting!

Then there's a race across town back to the Convention Centre in rooms 5AB, on the first floor. Here Zach will be appearing with his Before The Door partners Neal Dodson and Cory Moosa to talk about a new project. The room holds roughly 200 people, so if you want to see this, get there as early as you can. You might not make the Heroes panel AND the Archaia one, so get ready to make Sophie's choice!

On Friday there's a Heroes All Access party at the House of Blues from 3-5pm. If you're a Heroes All Access Member you can get in for free and get a whole host of free goodies. If not, you can queue and pay on the door but again, get there early. Zach will not be at the event but if you're a Heroes fan this can't be missed. It costs $10 on the door and there is merchandise to buy inside. David H. Lawrence XVII (Eric Doyle) will be there to sign, as will Oliver Grigsby, who wrote the episode 'I Am Sylar', and Jason Badower, the graphic novel artist.

All weekend you can pop down to the Paramount booth(3535) and get your free Spock foam hand. There is no advertised Sylar merchandise from NBC this year, but hang around their booth(4029)because they may have Heroes related bags and other swag hanging around. Also, Archaia comics booth is number 2635, might be worth loitering after the announcements on Saturday in case they have anything Zach-related going on.

And if you see a girl in a white tshirt with I AM SYLAR in black letters, that's me! Come and say Hi!

Details have been released for the US launch of the Star Trek DVD, on November 17th this year.

There will be three versions, a three-disc Blu-ray with digital copy, two-disc DVD with digital copy, and a single-disc DVD. Unfortunately it seems that there are no cast commentaries, and therefore no Zach thoughts on the movie.

JJ Abrams said; "I cannot wait for fans of Star Trek to check out the home entertainment release of the film. The behind-the-scenes features on the DVD -- and especially the Blu-ray -- give a wonderful look at the crazy hard work and incredible fun that went into making this movie. The cast and crew were truly extraordinary to work with -- watching these special features, you'll see why. Zachary Quinto at the Star Trek Premiere in London

Zachary attended the London Premiere on Monday night and we were there to greet him as an exuberant crowd gave him and the rest of the Star Trek cast a warm welcome.

Some had waited outside the Empire Leicester Square since 7am to catch a glimpse of the cast but it wasn’t until almost 5pm when the party got started. A custom blue Star Trek carpet was rolled out and the stars started to arrive, beginning with Simon Pegg (Scotty) in a traditional kilt. JJ Abrams, Eric Bana, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, John Cho and Karl Urban all attended and signed autographs for waiting fans whilst Zach’s brother Joe stalked the red carpet with two cameras, getting access which his fellow photographers could only dream of. Other attending celebs were Jonathan Ross with his kids, comedian Peter Serafanowicz who sported a Trek tshirt, Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond, Lorraine Kelly and Anthony Costa, formerly of boy band Blue.

After a seemingly endless round of interviews Zach began signing and without a hint of bias we can say that he was easily the most popular cast member. He diligently signed for as many people as possible and was careful to acknowledge every fan individually as he made his way along the barrier. Jonathan Ross stopped him on the carpet to introduce his kids.

Fans had come from all over the country to see Zach, some like us had tickets for the screening itself as they had been available to buy with the proceeds going to the Prince’s Trust. Inside the cinemas JJ Abrams introduced the film with Zach, Chris Pine and producers Bryan Burk and Jeffrey Chernov.

The vocal crowd were particularly excited to see Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Zachary giving Kirk a Vulcan nerve pinch, and Simon Pegg’s excitable turn as Scotty.

Review will be up shortly! Hope you like our pictures in the gallery.
